Scrapbook from 1953 Bossier High School band trip. Compiled by Marabeth Naremore Thompson, class of 1956. Includes newspaper clippings, postcards from cities and hotels, matchbooks from restaurants, maps, a trip itinerary, rooming list, bus list.
The Bossier High Band attened the Lions International convention held in Chicago from July 8 - 11, 1953. According to newspaper articles in the scrapbook, the band left Bossier City July 6 and began an 11 day concert tour with stops at Michigan City, MI; Toronto, Canada; Niagara Falls, NY; Cincinnati, OH; and Savannah, TN. The band also played at a White Sox vs. Cleveland Indians game at Comiskey Park on July 10, 1953. The band was under the direction of Kenneth L. Green and was sponsored by the Louisiana Lions Clubs. The band was selected by the state organization to represent Louisiana in competition with dozens of other amateur bands from all over the nation and foreign countries.
From 90 - 105 band members traveled to the convention (number differs in newspaper articles). Accompanying the band was director Green; Bossier High School principal, Emmett Cope; school board member W.M. Waller; parish superintendent of education, R.V. Kerr and Mrs. Kerr; Mr. Judson W. Naremore of the Bossier Band and Trust Company and Mrs. Naremore; assistant director, Mr. Charles Raley and his wife Mrs. Raley; teachers, Miss Rebecca Hall and Mrs. E.T. Nix; and nurse Miss Fane Ruth Ahearn.
