Plain Dealing's Prided School Building- Pioneer School |
Scope & Content |
Article about the Plain Dealing's Prided School Building of Other Days- Now Only a Memory Shown is a picture of Plain Dealing's old Pioneer High School, the halftone for which was furnished the Banner by Mr. Ardis Manry, of Clarkston, Ga., the original picture, made during 1989, being owned by Mrs. R.C. Purcell, of Plain Dealing. The picture is run in this issue in connection with the article appearing below, contributed by Hon. J.T. Manry, also of Plain Dealing, who writes: "The school seems to have opened on the 6th day of January, 1889. This date is fixed upon by an entry in a diary kept by the Hon. L.T. Sanders, which haveing reference to his little daughter, stated: Janie went to school this morning." The building was erected by S.J. Zeigler, the then vice president of the Cotton Belt's branch road, which had shortly prior to that time completed from Lewisville, Ark, into Shreveport. It likely isn't known to many of the Banner's readers, but this place was originally named "Guinshine," for one of the Jay Gould stockholders, but soon was changed to "Plain Dealing," the name of the big plantation (5000 acers) embracing its site, and owned by James O. Gilmer. This pioneeer resident settled here during 1840 some three years before Bossier was created when the entire section was still a portion of Claiborne Parish. It is well that Mr. Manry has furnished the foregoing interesting bit of local history. It will doubtless be new to many of freshen the memory of some of the Banner's older readers. |
