Letter to Buzz from Bailey dated April 26, 1986 |
Scope & Content |
Typed letter to Buzzer dated April 26, 1986 from Bailey explaining his movements over the past week and a return letter from Buzz to Bailey. April 26, 1986 Dear Buzzer, I'm listening to Prarie Home Companion and catching up on long-overdue correspondence. I hope you'll forgive my tardiness, but I've had so much to learn around this place that I haven't done some of the more important things. Orlando is pleasant. Someone described the downtown as a big park, and I quite agree. Lakes everywhere and lots of big trees. I think Kristi and Sarah will enjoy living here. The paper is first-rate, which I can say since I had nothing to do with it getting that way. We topped 350,000 recently in circulation, which had everybody dreaming of further glory. It's fun, though, to be on this side of the game, since we fought the Journal's circulation problem for so long. I spent all of last week in Tallahassee covering the Legislature. Most of the time I worked on a couple of editorials on medical malpractice. It's not unusual for me to spend a week or more on a series. The Legislature is quite advanced in terms of staff and accommodations. Tort "reform" seems to be the big issue this time. Last Monday, 3, 500 doctors marched on the Capitol. Buzz I think they are barking up the wrong tree, but that's another story. I have heard from the Tiners. Stan I eager to get back to Shreveport and start showing folks how a Harvard-educated editor runs a newspaper. Kristi has the female lead in the First Methodist musical about Noah. Maybe you folks can attend and tell me how she did. Sarah is getting so big that she talks to her daddy on the phone. She'll be two next week. I miss all you friends in Shreveport. It's really a good place to live. Please stay in touch. Sincerely, Bailey Buzz Wojecki's Reply Letter: May 8, 1986 May 8, 1986 Dear Bailey, It was good to hear from you. Life rolls along, and we are now in the vacation planning mode. We will be in Fr. Myers from around Aug. 1 to Aug. 9. I hope to be able to journey to Orlando to visit you. I trust by now that you have found an acceptable dining place where Moo Goo Gal Pen is served (did I spell that right?). The Shreveport scene is bustling. Dee and Scotto have announced their intent not to seek re-election. The black councilmen seem to have opposition waiting in the wings. Scopena is about to be repossessed by the Land Bank according to the news. The Roemers have certainly paid a high price these past few years. I hope that they can salvage their homes and some modicum of security. I know very little about the details. I am bus riding to Tech manna in company of Buddy Roemer and other notables. The trip was put together by Buddy ostensibly to look into the tribulations of higher education. May Jones is touting a new railroad study. It will only take $100 million to do the job. He keeps saying the Feds will pick up the tab. He must know something I do not. The Parkways off I'm told. Gauthier was reduced back to patrolman. Remember, he went from chief to patrolman, then from patrolman to lieutenant, and now its back to patrolman. It's finally and totally in the hands of Judge Kitchens, Bobby remains hopeful and so do I. The big story is the Captains are having a good year. I have been twice, and it appears that the fans are returning. The stadium is very nice, and my only regret is that Marvin did not live long enough to carry through with building the stadium in B.C. on the riverfront. I have just gone through the annual ritual of planting my flowers and veggies. Unfortunately one of our pups loves to dig, and I am now in the re-planting mode. Another consequence of my digging is that I cut my buried cable (cable tv) for the fourth time since we hooked on. The first time was most notable. We had raced home to see Dallas (I think J.R. was supposed to get shot or something) It was very cold, so I went outside to chop some firewood. After a few chops, I heard Jane scream as though she was mortally wounded. I raced to the window. She stood there mortified and in a rather unpleasant tone told me I had cut the cable. This sago has other equally interesting chapters, but I must move on. I know you will think this somewhat patronizing, but I do find the editorial page somewhat bleak these days. I admit to not reading it with as much enthusiasm as I used to. It's kind of like watching little league baseball. It's much more fun it you know the kids (or have one) playing. The Journal editorial is now faceless. I miss not having you agree or disagree with. Our friend Edwin is rolling the dice again today. The jury is supposed to take the case. The second time it seems to me that Volly has come off looking as being in command which was not the case first go-around. I think most people just wish this whole matter would disappear. The election of Edwards could be another chapter to Tuchman's "In Search of Folly". Just returned from Lion's Club where Mrs. John Breaux was the guest speaker. She did a "powder puff" speech on how a positive mental attitude can lift us "arribay adelante". She did a very nice job, but it appears that if campaign fund raising is the measure of candidate's chances then the verdict has already been passed in this race. Been watching the "North & South", and I have enjoyed the re-enactments very much. It's surprising how many folks are taping this series. At the beginning of the series "Tell the Times" had a redneck comment about enjoying all the "yankee killing". Two days later a response was printed which stated the previous caller should stay tuned to the latter part of the series when the "rebel killing" would begin. Sectionalism is alive and well, the only thing missing is a good cause to bring out the worst. I am really glad to know that Orlando is meeting your expectations and more. I do remember the area as being full of lakes. Isn't it right in the "lade country"? I know you are looking forward to schools and which means you'll have your family together again. We are all well, Andrew is going through this "Rite of Little League" with some success. He hit a stand up triple the other night, but his South Bossier expansion team is struggling at 0-3. Jane is really involved these days with the "FDC"…Professional Development Center. They have just moved into new quarters at the Caddo School Board Hdqts, on Midway. Keep me posted on your doings. Keep me in mind on your next "viaje" to our Spanish Speaking neighbors. Su Amlgo, Buzzardo |
