| Scope & Content | Copy of letter from "Cousin Kate". Crops are fine out here. Pa and Brother William will make near 200 bales of cotton and three thousand bushels of corn for sale. Uncle Elisha Fort is doing better than he ever done in his life. He has a nice new house and a lot of his own. He moved home the first of Sept. He is doing business in the shaving line. He made four thousand dollars last year. I am very glad that he has turned out to do better for he has as nice a wife as any man. James Connell and Bob Baxder are about to fall through with their iron works. They lack old man Baxder to manage for them. I am very sorry for them but fortunes often change hands. There is nothing solid here below. Jim has two children, a daughter and son. Pa told me to present his love to you all. Tell Aunt Dolly that she owes her thanks to Col. Mims for the salt the she receives. He would not have any pay from Pa for it. I have not seen Mr. Nelson but once or twice this summer. He always inquires after you and how you are getting along. I want you to speak a good word in my behalf with some of your old bachelors or young widowers. They must not be more than forty years old nor under thirty. I am determined to visit you all out there and who knows what luck I may have. You must not let Aunt Dolly see this part of my letter. I believe that I have written all that I can. Think of writing soon. Your Cousin, Kate |
