LeBLANC "The Father of the Old Age Pension" The picture on the other side was taken during the ceremony held in the State Capitol at Baton Rouge in July 1948, when the first Old Age checks of $50.00 were being mailed. Senator Dudley J. LeBlanc, in 1931, was the first candidate for Governor in Louisiana, and for -that matter possibly in the entire United States to advocate a specific Old Age Pension, and has worked untiringly since that time for this meritorius and humane program. Immediately before this picture was taken, Governor Long had just introduced Senator LeBlanc to the vast audience, and had said: "Ladies and Gentlemen: If gives me great pleasure to introduce to you Senator Dudley J. LeBlanc, the father of the Old Age Pension in Louisiana. He was the first candidate in this State to advocate Old Age Pension, and he has worked hard for the enactment of this Law." Yes, the good old men and women of Louisiana, who are now receiving Old Age Pension, owe an everlasting debt of gratitude to this true and sincere friend of the needy, Senator Dudley J. LeBlanc, for his diligent and untiring efforts in their behalf. And, now, because of the high cost of living, he contends that $50.00 a month is not enough for the dear old people to live on and he is inaugurating a campaign to give them $75.00 a month as an Old Age Pension.
