That rosy picture also is being painted by former Mayor George L. Nattin Sr., who was Bossier's mayor from 1961 to 1973. Although Nattin is now a Houston resident and works for security corporation, he noted that "with the type of citizens that live in bossier, I cannot see anything but continued growth. They have very fine people there." Nattin recalled several memorable accomplishments during his administration: operating the city on a balanced budget, the building of Bossier Medical Center, the expansion of fire department, jail and police department facilities and an expanded sewer service. A major hurdle he said he overcame during his administration was the passage of the first 1-cent sales tax in North Louisiana. Nattin said he managed to rally the public behind him and pass the tax because the public "realized we needed additional funding in Bossier City because we were mostly a bedroom community without the industry." But what was once a "bedroom community" now has turned into a bustling city, notes former Mayor James L. Cathey, who headed the city from 1973 until 1977. |
