Description |
The Dixie Overland Highway was begun in 1918 as a private venture, with headquarters in Georgia. During the 1920s and '30s it was taken over by Huey P. Long as part of his massive road-building projects. The following people were present at this dedication of Dixie Overland Highway (now Highway 80) in 1929:(left to right) Robert Brothers, considered by many to be Huey Long's "right hand man"; Volney Voss Whittington, state representative from Bossier Parish 1928-1932; Governor Huey P. Long; Mrs. H.P. Long (wearing the fox stole); J.R. Wendt, state maintenance engineer, formerly Bossier Parish engineer: J.G. McDade, president of Bossier Parish Police Jury; and V.R. Rucher. The last two men have never been truly identified, but they are believed to be D.A. Horton Sr. and his brother. They owned the store in the background. |
